Very nice post. It all comes down to playing your hand with a purpose. Before you call big bet (like 1/2 of your stack) after flop, you should first ask yourself whether you are ready to call an all in bet after turn if your hand does not improve because more than likely it would be the next move from the other player. It is equivalent to all in after flop with an open end straight draw in this case, which is obviously a negative EV move.
Same thing can happen when you call preflop raise of 1/3 of the effective stack (1/3 of your stack or the other player's stack) with a small pocket pair. This is also a terrible -EV. Before calling the raise ask yourself what you would do if you don't hit your set which is only less than 10% chance and the other player move all in with pot size bet after flop. It is really a simple fold or all in situation here preflop if you just think for a second.
