Gus Hansen Leads Aussie Millions $100k Challenge
Final Eight Return To Play For $1,012,000 Prize

Gus Hansen

The seventh running of the Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge got underway yesterday at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, with 22 of the world’s top players posting the six-figure buy-in, building a $2,200,000 AUD prize pool. Four players will make the money, with the eventual champion winning $1,012,000 AUD.

After ten hours of play, 2007 Aussie Millions Main Event champion Gus Hansen ended the day with the lead. Hansen eliminated Phil Ivey on the last hand of the night, getting the rest of Ivey’s stack in on a 976 board, with Ivey holding 88 against Hansen’s 76. The Great Dane’s two pair held up as the board ran out with the K and the A, sending Ivey to the rail and giving Hansen a small lead over Australia’s own Joe Hachem with eight remaining.

This massive buy-in event features some unique rules, such as a 30-second time clock that is put on players when action gets to them. If they fail to act in that time their hand will either be declared dead if they are facing a bet or raise, or they will be forced to check if they are facing no prior action. Also, in this event there are no antes, and all preflop action is pot-limit, while post flop action is no-limit.

Last year, Sam Trickett earned $1.5 million for topping the record setting field of 38 players. Trickett has made the final table of this event again this year, but will enter as the shortest stack of the eight remaining players.

Here is a look at the final table chip counts:

Rank        Player        Chip Count
1         Gus Hansen         567,000
2         Joe Hachem         538,500
3         Dan Smith         346,500
4         Mikhail Smirnov         265,000
5         Sorel Mizzi         228,500
6         Tony G         102,000
7         Nam Le         79,500
8         Sam Trickett
